Minerals and sleep: what traditions say, what science says

Can crystals help us sleep better? Our position is straightforward: no inherent effect of a stone has been demonstrated. Here is how traditions, mineralogy and ritual can coexist honestly.

⚠ Our position

There is no scientific evidence that crystals act through physical mechanisms on the body. We present our minerals as objects of symbolic ritual and geological beauty, without attributing any care function to them.

A 5,000-year-old practice

The Egyptians used lapis lazuli in funerary rituals. The Greeks wore amethyst to avoid drunkenness (amethystos = not drunk). Jade has been at the heart of Chinese medicine for 4,000 years. These practices do not prove the efficacy of stones — but they show that humanity has given them a deep and universal symbolic place.

What science says — honestly

In 2001, psychologist Christopher French conducted an experiment: half of the participants received a real quartz crystal, while the others received a plastic crystal. Both groups reported the same sensations. The conclusion is that the sensations are real — but they come from the wearer’s beliefs, not from the physical properties of the crystal.

Neuroscience

A regular ritual can serve primarily as a behavioural cue: softer light, slow breathing, a notebook or a mineral can help mark the transition between day and night. This does not turn a stone into a treatment.

The role of the evening ritual

Regardless of the stone chosen, a regular pre-sleep ritual can structure the transition into the night. When you associate an object with a calm routine, it becomes one personal cue among others — without any inherent effect being attributed to the mineral.

This is the spirit of our ONYRÊVE protocols: the stone remains a visual and symbolic cue, chosen for its presence, colour or the story it evokes.

5 minerals and their evening symbolism

💎
Amethyst
Ancient Greece • Egypt
An emblematic violet crystal. Its Greek name means “not drunk”, and its cultural history feeds the imagery of dreams. Choose it for its colour and its presence in a night-time space.
🌕
Moonstone
India • Rome • Celtic traditions
Associated with the moon and cycles in many traditions. Its chatoyancy, or adularescence, and pearly flashes make it a distinctive mineral for an evening ritual.
✨
Labradorite
Inuit traditions • Shamanic narratives
Its blue and green flashes evoke an aurora borealis. The cultural stories around it can nourish an imaginative journey, understood as symbolic language.
◯
Howlite
Modern Western tradition
A white stone veined with grey, chosen for its matte texture and visual softness. A beautiful ritual object for anyone who likes to give shape to the transition into night.
💎
Hackmanite
Discovered in Greenland • Tenebrescent
One of the few naturally tenebrescent stones: it changes colour under UV light and returns to its original shade in natural light. ONYRÊVE is among the few shops in France to offer it.
