CBD and sleep: what the science really says
Does CBD really help us sleep better? Biological mechanisms, a CBD / CBN comparison, gemmotherapy synergy — and complete honesty about what is proven and what is not yet.
The state of sleep in France
We sleep 1 hour 30 minutes less per night than 50 years ago. France is one of the European countries with the highest use of sleeping pills — 13 million boxes of benzodiazepines are sold each year. These medicines do not address underlying causes and can lead to dependence within a few weeks.
Interest in CBD and natural alternatives has surged since 2020. But not every claim carries the same weight. Here is what the science actually says.
The WHO has been studying CBD since 2019. Its report concludes that it “shows no potential for abuse or dependence” and that evidence of its effectiveness for anxiety and sleep is “promising but requires further research.” This is not medicine — it is informed wellbeing.
How CBD interacts with sleep
The cannabidiol (CBD) interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors found throughout the body, including in the amygdala (fear and stress) and the hypothalamus (the sleep–wake cycle).
1. Reducing nighttime anxiety
Anxiety is the leading cause of insomnia. CBD modulates 5-HT1A receptors (serotonin), reducing rumination and making it easier to fall asleep. Several studies from 2019–2023 report improvements among 79% of anxious participants.
2. Quality, not just duration
Unlike sleeping pills that alter deep sleep, CBD appears to preserve — and may even improve — slow-wave sleep (N3), the most restorative phase. A fundamental difference.
3. Preserved REM sleep
Benzodiazepines suppress REM sleep (dreams). At a low dose, CBD appears to have the opposite effect: it enhances dream vividness without causing excessive nightmares.
Studies on CBD and sleep remain limited: small samples and specific populations. What we observe among ONYRÊVE clients is promising — it is not generalisable proof. Consult your doctor if you experience chronic sleep problems.
CBD vs CBN: what is the difference?
The CBN (cannabinol) is often described as CBD’s more sedating partner. This lesser-known cannabinoid has been studied since the 1970s.
| CBD | CBN | |
|---|---|---|
| Main action | Anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory | Sedative, mildly hypnotic |
| Bedtime timing | 20–40 minutes before | 45–60 minutes before |
| Suitable profile | Difficulty falling asleep, anxiety | Night waking, insufficient N3 |
| At ONYRÊVE | Roll-ons, flowers, oils | CBN Dream, sleep patches |
Natural allies of CBD
CBD may work best as part of a broader routine. At ONYRÊVE, we favour a combined approach:
- Herbalgem gemmotherapy — bud macerates (linden, fig and hawthorn) traditionally associated with the autonomic nervous system.
- Magnesium bisglycinate — magnesium deficiency is common and may be associated with difficulties falling asleep.
- Ashwagandha KSM-66 — an adaptogen whose effects on deep sleep have been studied in randomised trials (PMID 32169287).
- Dream plants — Calea Zacatechichi, Silene Capensis and rosemary, traditionally associated with dream memory.

The legal framework in France
Since the ministerial decree of 30 December 2021, CBD (≤0.3% THC) may legally be sold in France. All ONYRÊVE products are accompanied by Certificates of Analysis (COAs) issued by independent laboratories. Sale restricted to adults.
