Magnesium and sleep: forms, doses and routines

Magnesium contributes to many physiological processes, including normal muscle and nervous-system function. This guide explains the main forms and how to think about magnesium as part of an evening routine — without turning a supplement into a medical promise.

Magnesium insufficiency: a quiet issue

Since the 1950s, magnesium intake in Western diets has fallen in many populations because of soil depletion, cereal refining and the growing place of processed foods. Chronic stress is also often discussed as a factor that can increase nutritional needs.

Possible signs of inadequate intake are non-specific: unexplained tiredness, night cramps, diffuse tension, difficulty falling asleep and night waking. They can have many causes, so they should not be treated as a diagnosis.

📊 ANSES France data

The INCA3 national food-consumption study cited on the French page reported that 77% of women and 72% of men had intakes below nutritional references. These figures describe population-level intake, not an individual diagnosis.

Why magnesium is involved in sleep

Magnesium is involved in several systems relevant to sleep and relaxation:

1. NMDA receptor regulation

NMDA receptors are involved in excitatory signalling. Magnesium naturally modulates this system, which is one reason it is studied in relation to nervous-system balance.

2. GABA system

Magnesium contributes to normal nervous-system function. It is not accurate to present it as a benzodiazepine or CBD substitute, but adequate nutrition may support the body’s ordinary regulatory processes.

3. Melatonin production

Magnesium is involved as a cofactor in many enzymatic reactions. Sleep hormones are regulated by a complex network, so magnesium alone should not be described as a direct melatonin treatment.

4. Muscle relaxation

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function. Night cramps can have multiple causes, and persistent or severe symptoms should be discussed with a health professional.

🧬 What the research says

The evidence on magnesium and sleep is promising but not definitive. Some small studies have reported improvements in sleep measures, particularly in people with low intake, while larger and better-controlled studies are still needed.

Which form to choose? An honest comparison

Forms of magnesium differ in their elemental content, absorption and digestive tolerance. The right choice depends on the product, the person and the reason for taking it.

Magnesium Bisglycinate★ ONYRÊVE preference
A chelated form bound to glycine, often chosen for its generally good digestive tolerance. Product quality and the actual amount of elemental magnesium matter more than marketing claims. Good option to discuss for an evening routine.
Magnesium MalateGood morning option
Bound to malic acid and often positioned for daytime use. Some people prefer it in the morning rather than before bed. Usually considered a daytime option.
Magnesium CitrateAcceptable
A widely available form. It can be suitable for some people, but higher amounts may have a laxative effect. Check individual digestive tolerance.
Magnesium Oxide / Sulphate⚠ Less suitable for this purpose
Often inexpensive, with lower absorption reported for oxide and a greater likelihood of digestive effects. It may not be the first choice for an evening routine. Choose based on need, label and professional advice.

Dose and timing

Nutritional reference values vary by age, sex and country. Supplement labels generally state the amount of elemental magnesium. Do not use a high dose simply because a study used one.

⏱ ONYRÊVE routine example

Use the product label as the starting point and ask a pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure. If you choose an evening routine, taking a moderate labelled amount with water one to two hours before bed may be more comfortable than taking it immediately before lying down.

Combining magnesium with CBD and gemmotherapy

Magnesium, CBD and plant macerates are different products with different precautions. Combining them is not automatically better and should not replace professional advice.

  • Magnesium + CBD — separate mechanisms and separate precautions. Follow both labels and check for interactions.
  • Magnesium + Herbalgem linden macerate — a possible symbolic evening pairing, not a validated treatment protocol.
  • Magnesium + valerian — valerian can interact with medicines and is not suitable for everyone. Ask a professional before combining products.

Foods richest in magnesium

Supplements do not replace a balanced diet. Food sources include:

  • Pumpkin seeds — around 592 mg/100 g in the cited food tables
  • Dark chocolate above 85% — around 228 mg/100 g
  • Almonds — around 270 mg/100 g
  • Cooked spinach — around 87 mg/100 g
  • Legumes — around 120–160 mg/100 g
  • Quinoa — around 64 mg/100 g
  • Magnesium-rich mineral waters — check the label for the exact content
⚠ Precautions

Magnesium supplements are generally well tolerated at labelled amounts, but severe kidney disease requires medical advice. Interactions are possible with some antibiotics and osteoporosis medicines because magnesium can affect absorption. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you take medication or have a medical condition.
